Longing for Presence
Genesis invites us into the story of a relational God who made us for His Presence, a closeness first savored in Eden but fractured by sin and exile. Yet even as we stray, Godās unyielding pursuit and enduring covenants blaze through, drawing us back to the nearness we were designed to crave.

Introduction
Genesis is the Bibleās epic prologue to the story of a people called to dwell in Godās presence. It opens with paradiseāEdenāa place brimming with proximity to God, where humanity lived in perfect harmony with their Creator. But things go catastrophically wrong when Adam and Eve, tempted to grasp for what they already had, spiral humanity into sin and separation. The God who walked with Adam in the garden now seems distant, as the narrative hurtles eastward, away from His presence. Genesis is not just a story of what was lost but of a God who begins His relentless pursuit to restore what was broken.
At the heart of this book is a relational God who creates out of love, blessing His creation with the gift of His presence. Humanity, bearing Godās image, was designed to live in joyful communion with Him. But we see a deepening exileāfrom the garden, from each other, and ultimately, from God Himself. Itās a story of longing: for status, wealth, power, and securityānone of which can fill the void left by Godās absence. Yet, in the midst of this downward spiral, God intervenes, choosing Abram (soon to be Abraham) as the conduit through whom the world would experience His blessing and presence once again. Through covenant, God promises proximity, even as humanity persists in rebellion.
Genesis reminds us that the good life isnāt found in the well-watered valleys of our own choosing but in the land of promise, where Godās presence dwells. Itās the opening act of Godās grand plan to make His presence known and restore humanity to Himselfāa longing we carry to this day, fulfilled in the promises of God and sustained by His unshakable faithfulness.
Memory Verse
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them. And God said to them, āBe fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.

Scripture Reading Plan
As a church, weāre on a journey through the first books of the Bible, exploring what it means to be a people of Godās presence. As we unpack this theme together on Sundays, weāre also inviting you to immerse yourself in each book by reading through them as a community. These texts include some of the most familiar storiesāand some of the most challenging onesāso donāt hesitate to lean on the study materials weāve provided. Letās journey through Scripture together, allowing it to shape us as we walk in Godās presence.
Best Practices:
Keep a bible, pen, journal, and this guide together at a spot where you read
For each day write 2 things:
A few words describing what you just read. Ex, āJoseph has dreams and his brothers get angryā
Anything that was interesting, challenging, or encouraging to you. This could be a thought, a question you had, or something that is on your mind.
WIth overview studies like this we arenāt trying to understand everything (thereās a whole lot there!), but are familiarizing ourselves with the story God with his people and asking the Spirit to highlight something. It's like a road trip, you canāt stop everywhere, but enjoy the places you do spend time.
