Remembering  Presence

Deuteronomy is Moses’ final plea to God’s people: remember the God who has been faithful and near. After years of rebellion and wandering, Israel stands at a crossroads—will they choose life by remembering His presence, or will they drift into forgetfulness and ruin? With urgency and love, Moses calls them to wholehearted devotion, reminding them that true life is found in obedience, love, and steadfast trust in the God who walks among them.

Sunday Sermons

Introduction

Deuteronomy is Moses’ final sermon, a heartfelt call to the next generation—and to us—to remember the God who has been faithful and near. After the rebellion and wandering chronicled in Numbers, this moment is pivotal. Moses invites the people to reflect on God’s unwavering faithfulness and His astounding closeness, reminding them that their survival and blessing depend on remembering who God is and what He has done. Forgetting, on the other hand, leads to rebellion, ruin, and a life disconnected from the presence of God.

At the heart of Deuteronomy is the Shema (Deut. 6:4-9), a rallying cry to orient every part of life around God’s covenant faithfulness. To “hear” is to listen and obey; to “love” is to devote both emotion and action. It’s not a list of good ideas but an urgent invitation to choose life—life that flows from obedience to God’s ways and wholehearted devotion to Him. The call is clear: remember the God who carried you, fought for you, and chose you, not because of your greatness but because of His love. Forgetting leads to idolatry, self-reliance, and ultimate ruin, but remembering leads to blessing, holiness, and life in God’s presence.

Deuteronomy doesn’t just rehearse laws; it renews covenant partnership. God promises to circumcise hearts, transforming His people from the inside out so they can truly love and live for Him. As Moses sets before them life and death, blessing and curse, the call is as urgent today as it was then: choose life. Remember the God who walks in your midst, who treasures you, who is jealous for your devotion, and who, in Christ, has made a way for His presence to dwell with us forever. The good life is found in remembering and responding to the presence of God with obedience, love, and steadfast devotion.

Memory Verse

“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.”

— Deuteronomy 6:4–5, ESV

Scripture Reading Plan

As a church, we’re on a journey through the first books of the Bible, exploring what it means to be a people of God’s presence. As we unpack this theme together on Sundays, we’re also inviting you to immerse yourself in each book by reading through them as a community. These texts include some of the most familiar stories—and some of the most challenging ones—so don’t hesitate to lean on the study materials we’ve provided. Let’s journey through Scripture together, allowing it to shape us as we walk in God’s presence.

Best Practices:

Keep a bible, pen, journal, and this guide together at a spot where you read

For each day write 2 things:

  1. A few words describing what you just read.  Ex, “Joseph has dreams and his brothers get angry”

  2. Anything that was interesting, challenging, or encouraging to you. This could be a thought, a question you had, or something that is on your mind.

WIth overview studies like this we aren’t trying to understand everything (there’s a whole lot there!), but are familiarizing ourselves with the story God with his people and asking the Spirit to highlight something.  It's like a road trip, you can’t stop everywhere, but enjoy the places you do spend time.
