Rejecting Presence

Numbers is a sobering account of how God’s people repeatedly rejected His presence, turning blessing into rebellion. What begins with hope—a camp organized around God’s glory—unravels into grumbling, doubt, and outright defiance. Yet even as Israel resists His leading, God remains faithful, calling them forward with both judgment and mercy. Numbers challenges us to examine our own hearts: Will we reject God’s presence through fear and discontent, or will we trust that His presence is our greatest blessing and the only way home?

Sunday Sermons

Introduction

If Leviticus showed us how God made a way for His presence to dwell among His people, Numbers shows us how they repeatedly rejected that gift. It’s a raw and sobering account of Israel’s rebellion against God’s faithfulness, as they fumble their way through the wilderness, grumbling, doubting, and outright defying the God who has blessed them beyond measure. What begins with hope—the camp organized, the tabernacle filled with glory, and Aaron’s blessing ringing out—descends into chaos as the people spiral into rejection.

The rebellion unfolds in patterns that are uncomfortably familiar. The people grumble, longing for Egypt’s slavery rather than trusting God to satisfy their cravings. They doubt God’s power, trembling before the giants of Canaan while clutching the grapes of His promised blessing. They reject God’s authority, with Korah and company arrogantly claiming, “We’re all holy!” And they question God’s trustworthiness, crying out in despair over thirst and hardship. Time and again, God responds with both judgment and mercy—blessing them even when they curse Him, and interceding for them when they rebel.

Numbers is a cautionary tale for every generation tempted to drift. It reminds us that rejecting God’s presence—whether by fear, pride, or discontentment—only leads to wandering. Yet, even in the wilderness, God remains faithful. He continues to bless, provide, and call His people forward. Numbers invites us to examine how we, too, lose the plot: rejecting the blessing of God, glorifying life apart from His presence, and fooling ourselves into thinking we know better. Numbers challenges us to grab hold of God’s presence with clear eyes and full commitment, to walk not in rebellion but in trust, knowing that His presence is our greatest blessing and the only way home.

Memory Verse

The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.

Scripture Reading Plan

As a church, we’re on a journey through the first books of the Bible, exploring what it means to be a people of God’s presence. As we unpack this theme together on Sundays, we’re also inviting you to immerse yourself in each book by reading through them as a community. These texts include some of the most familiar stories—and some of the most challenging ones—so don’t hesitate to lean on the study materials we’ve provided. Let’s journey through Scripture together, allowing it to shape us as we walk in God’s presence.

Best Practices:

Keep a bible, pen, journal, and this guide together at a spot where you read

For each day write 2 things:

  1. A few words describing what you just read.  Ex, “Joseph has dreams and his brothers get angry”

  2. Anything that was interesting, challenging, or encouraging to you. This could be a thought, a question you had, or something that is on your mind.

WIth overview studies like this we aren’t trying to understand everything (there’s a whole lot there!), but are familiarizing ourselves with the story God with his people and asking the Spirit to highlight something.  It's like a road trip, you can’t stop everywhere, but enjoy the places you do spend time.
